About GATE
GATE is a national computer-based test run jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institutes of Technology for the National Coordination Board — GATE. IIT Madras is the organising institute for GATE 2027, and the papers are in English. The information brochure revised on 27 September 2026 is the pattern used here.
Each paper has 65 questions and 100 marks in one sitting of 3 hours. Ten questions are General Aptitude (15 marks): five of 1 mark and five of 2 marks. In CS, EC, EE, ME and CE the other 55 questions carry 85 marks, of which Engineering Mathematics carries 13 marks and the rest of the subject 72 marks. A candidate may take one paper, or two papers from the combinations the brochure allows.
Questions are multiple choice (one of four answers), multiple select (one or more of four answers), or numerical answer (a signed real number typed on the on-screen keypad). A wrong multiple-choice answer costs one third of a mark on a 1-mark question and two thirds of a mark on a 2-mark question. Multiple-select and numerical answers have no negative marking and no partial credit. Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator is allowed.
The published GATE score uses the whole cohort: 350 at the general qualifying mark and 900 at the mean of the top 0.1% (or top 10, whichever is larger). The general qualifying mark is the mean plus one standard deviation, kept between 25 and 40. OBC-NCL and EWS qualifying marks are nine tenths of that, and SC, ST and PwD qualifying marks are two thirds. A score card is issued only at or above the SC/ST/PwD qualifying mark, and it is valid for three years from the result. This site reports raw marks out of 100, because the score cannot be computed from one paper.
